According to the latest news, the organizers of ASEAN has approved World Cup 2034 co-hosting campaign which Vietnam and the other ASEAN countries are trying to run.
Recently, the Prime Ministers of the 10-member of the ASEAN have agreed to put forward the ‘2034 World Cup campaign’ in a meeting of ASEAN leaders, which seems to be a breakthrough of ASEAN football.
In the 34th ASEAN Summit to be held on June 23 in Bangkok, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and members set to build up a project to host World Cup 2034 which will be submitted to FIFA on 2026.
As scheduled, 2022 World Cup will be taken place in Qatar and 2026 World Cup is set to be held in America, Canada, and Mexico.
2030 World Cup is planned to come close with South America football fans of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
The contender in the hosting race for 2034 World Cup will be Egypt. there’s a fact that the chance for ASEAN to win the race is absolutely possible as FIFA will raise the number of member from 32 into 48 since 2026 and they also are targeting to develop football in such countries considered as ‘basin’ regions.
According to FIFA’s regulations, World Cup hosts will secure a solid slot to join the game. However, Vietnam along with 9 other ASEAN countries cannot have a joint ticket in 2034 World Cup even if we win the race. In that case, ASEAN is supposed to be given 1-2 slots which might be decided base on AFF Cup results the year before that.
Bangkok Post news commented:
“Vietnam is the strongest male football team of ASEAN at this time by standing 96th on FIFA table and Thailand ranked 2nd by standing 116th in the world. That means both countries need to launch massive bids in about 15 years to shorten the gap and to ready for fighting at World Cup.”
